I am a bit surprised that Peter Singer even invited Harriet McBryde Johnson to speak as a counter argument to his laughable utilitarian ideals. I find his simultaneous over emphasis on the difficulty of living with a disability and simplification of the ease to “eliminating” disability ridiculous. He not only narrowly defines disability within a framework of extreme medical necessity, but also fails to see how our societal structure is the disabling factor. I’m interested to see how Peter Singer’s philosophy changes over the next few years now that he has reached an age of inevitable bodily breakdown. I also think that his more recent philosophy of effective altruism furthers white guilt, white savior complex, imperialism, and simplifies corruption within countries throughout the world. Overall I am not a fan of Peter Singer and I think his philosophies lack substance. I do applaud him for inviting a counter speaker to his talk though. I am incredibly glad that Harriet McBryde Johnson also got multiple book deals out of this!
